Backlinks: The Basics Every Website Owner Should Know

Backlinks are a vital weapon in the webmarketer’s arsenal. No matter what kind of website you have, you can learn how to get backlinks that will help to boost your website traffic and your page ranking in search engine results. Mastering the process of building backlinks won’t take very long, but you do want to make sure you learn it correctly. Backlinks can backfire if you don’t know what you are doing.

So what are backlinks, exactly? They are exactly what the word’s parts suggest – a link from a website that leads back to your website. Backlinks tell a search engine that your website was considered ‘valid’ by the website that linked back to yours. It’s like giving your website a vote of confidence. But here’s where the distinction about backlinks needs to be made; the site that is giving you that vote of confidence needs to be a quality, relevant site to yours. A random, nonsensical backlink that you generated just to have a backlink will not help your search engine ranking, and could actually harm you.

Building backlinks involves a strategy, then. You can build backlinks in a variety of ways. One of the easiest is by submitting your website to links directories and articles directories. Link directories are categorized listings of websites. There are thousands of them on the web, some of which are free and some of which are not. Some are general, covering a broad spectrum of categories, while some of them are ‘niche’ directories, covering a specialized topic. You can list your website in as many directories as you want in order to add more backlinks. Just be certain that you post your site in the correct category using descriptive keyworkds, and that the link goes to relevant content on your site.

Article directories allow you to write and submit an article on any topic, with a link or links at the end that lead the reader back to your site. The goal is to have the kind of quality information in your articles that other website owners will want to use. They post your article on their website, in their emails to customers, or in their ezines, and you increase both the exposure of your website and the number of backlinks. Again, just be sure your articles are relevant to your website’s content. It won’t help you to create irrelevant backlinks.

Other ways to build backlinks include creating your own blog or forum and posting information and links to your site on them. Or, you can post a link to your site on someone else’s blog or forum. You can use social networking sites, creating a page for your site and linking back to specific topics on your webpage. Remember, make sure your backlinks connect between your site and a site that has a relevance to yours. As long as the connection makes sense, the search engines will consider your backlinks to be of high quality and will adjust your page rank accordingly.

Finally, a couple of warnings for you. First, avoid ‘backlink farms.’ These are sites that simply contain links to other sites, with no real content. These used to work, but search engines have gotten smarter. The same is true for linking from one of yoru sites to another – it’s not a great idea unless the content is related and you can use different IP addresses. And lastly, try to generate as many one-way links as possible. You can certainly accept the occasional reciprocal link agreement, but don’t make a habit of it. One-way links are much more impressive to the search engines.
